Seven European countries have issued a joint statement saying only Greenland and Denmark can decide on their future. French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, along with leaders from Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Denmark, jointly stated that Greenland is not subject to any kind of deal or pressure, and that decisions concerning it will be made solely by Denmark and the people of Greenland.
The European countries clarified in their statement that the Arctic region is extremely sensitive from the perspective of European and international security, and for this reason, a collective strategy is being adopted for security in the area.
The European countries stated that the security of the Arctic will be ensured in cooperation with NATO. The statement also unequivocally declared that a country’s borders, its territory, and its sovereignty are inviolable. Citing the UN Charter, Europe stated that borders cannot be changed and no country can lay claim to another country’s territory.
Europe also made it clear that while the United States is an important NATO partner, it does not have the right to make decisions about Greenland. The final decision on matters related to Greenland will be made by Denmark and Greenland alone.
Although no leader was named in the statement, it is being seen in the context of US President Donald Trump’s previous statements. It is believed that Europe has conveyed to the US, without explicitly naming anyone, that Greenland is not a real estate deal.
In short, Europe has clearly indicated to the United States that Greenland’s territory, its borders, and its future are non-negotiable, and that no external interference on this issue will be accepted.
