New York to require mental health warnings on social media

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has taken a significant step regarding social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Under a new law, she has directed these platforms to display clear and prominent mental health warnings on their feeds. The aim is to curb features that keep users glued to their screens for excessive periods.

According to a Times of India report, the new rule specifically targets social media design elements that encourage continuous scrolling or uninterrupted video viewing. These include infinite scroll, autoplay videos, and AI-based content feeds. The government believes these features are fostering addictive behaviors in users, particularly children and teenagers.

A report indicates that the law will apply to activities that occur wholly or partially within New York State. However, it will not apply if a user accesses these platforms from outside the state. The goal is to strengthen digital safety at the local level.

Governor Kathy Hochul has stated clearly that protecting the citizens of New York has been her top priority since taking office. This includes shielding children from the potential mental health harms of social media. She believes that features that encourage excessive use can negatively impact children’s mental health.
