The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has recently made a major decision. Bangladesh will import 180,000 tons of diesel from India between January and December 2026. For this, Bangladesh has signed a deal worth 146.2 million Taka with Numaligarh Refinery Limited, a subsidiary of Oil India Limited.
If the target of importing 180,000 tons of diesel in 2026 is distributed evenly throughout the year, Bangladesh will import approximately 15,000 tons of diesel from India every month. It’s worth noting that fuel cooperation between India and Bangladesh has been steadily increasing for almost a decade.
The foundation for this was laid in 2017 when the two countries signed a 15-year long-term agreement. Under this agreement, India’s Numaligarh Refinery Limited would supply diesel to the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation.
Initially, logistics were slow and quite expensive. From 2016 onwards, diesel was supplied by rail, with an average of approximately 2,200 tons per month and volumes ranging between 50,000 and 150,000 tons annually.
