Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, who are currently imprisoned in a corruption case, have been sentenced to 17 years in jail each by a Pakistani court. According to local media reports, a special court handed down the sentences to the PTI founder and his wife on Saturday in the Toshakhana-2 case.
The case revolves around the purchase of an expensive Bulgari jewelry set, gifted to Imran Khan by the Saudi Crown Prince during an official visit in 2021, at a significantly undervalued price.
According to a report in the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, Imran Khan was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and seven years under Section 5(2)47 (criminal misconduct by public servants).
The special court also sentenced Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, to a total of 17 years in jail under the same provisions. Both were also fined 16.4 million Pakistani rupees. Under Pakistani law, failure to pay the fine will result in additional jail time. Imran and Bushra’s legal teams have stated their intention to challenge the lower court’s decision in the High Court.
